Big Bass Bonanza: Bonus-Round Mechanics Explained

What the bonus round is

Most of the character of Big Bass Bonanza sits in its free spins feature. The base game is a fairly ordinary run of line wins, while the bonus round adds three connected ideas: fish symbols that carry money values, wilds that collect those values, and retriggers that add spins and multipliers. This explainer takes each idea in turn, using only what Pragmatic Play publishes, so that a newcomer can follow a bonus round as it happens rather than watching numbers appear without context.

For the basics of the game itself, including the controls and where the studio's demo lives, start with our Big Bass Bonanza overview.

The confirmed rules, step by step

Step 1: the trigger. Three, four or five scatter symbols start the feature, awarding 10, 15 or 20 free spins respectively. More scatters mean a longer feature, not a different one.

Step 2: money symbols. During the free spins, fish symbols carry money values. The studio's game page says these values can reach up to 2,000x. The launch announcement from December 2020 put the same idea in plainer words: each fish that lands on the reels has a monetary value.

Step 3: collection. A fish value is only paid when it is collected. On the current game page, wilds collect all visible money symbols. The launch announcement described the wild as the fisherman character, which is the same role presented through the game's theme.

Step 4: retriggers and multipliers. Wilds also count towards retriggers. Every fourth wild retriggers the feature with 10 more spins, and successive retriggers apply multipliers of 2x, 3x and 10x to later collections.

How collection and retriggers interact

The four steps connect in a simple way. Fish values on their own do nothing; a wild landing at the same time turns them into a win. Each wild also moves the feature towards its next retrigger, which brings both extra spins and a higher multiplier for what follows. In practice, the early part of a feature is about building up wilds, and the later part, if retriggers arrive, is about collections at a higher multiplier.

A worked illustration helps, with the clear caveat that the numbers are invented for explanation and are not a forecast. Suppose fish showing 2x, 5x and 10x the stake are on screen and a wild lands: the wild collects all three, a total of 17x the stake. If that wild is the fourth one collected, the feature retriggers with 10 extra spins and later collections are multiplied by 2x. A second retrigger raises that to 3x and a third to 10x. The rules never guarantee that any of this happens in a given feature; many bonus rounds end with modest totals.

Trying the feature in the official demo

Pragmatic Play's own page for the game offers a free demo, and it is the only demo source we have checked. Because a free spins feature may take many spins to arrive, a demo session is a slow way to see it, but a useful one: you can read the counters and collection animations without any money at stake. Our guide to demo controls explains what each display usually means.

Collection mechanics like this one sit alongside other bonus designs, such as cascading reels or hold-and-respin rounds, each changing a game in a different way. Our explainer on what a bonus feature changes in a slot game compares the main types, and our game mechanics section gathers related guides. If you are following the series, the sequel changed the structure of this same feature; our comparison of the first two releases sets the differences side by side.

Summary

The Big Bass Bonanza bonus round runs on a short chain: scatters start it, fish carry values of up to 2,000x, wilds collect those values, and every fourth wild retriggers the feature with 10 spins and a rising multiplier of 2x, 3x and then 10x. Reading the feature as that chain makes each animation easier to follow. As always, the paytable inside the version you open is the final reference, and no understanding of a feature changes the odds of any spin.
